NCI & IARC Workshop on HPV-driven Oropharyngeal Cancer November 2018

Professor Andy Ness attended a joint US National Cancer Institute and International Agency for Research on Cancer workshop on HPV-driven Oropharynx cancer on 26-27 November 2018 in Washington, USA.

 

Dr Andrea Waylen attended the 11th International Quality of Life Conference for Head & Neck Cancer hosted by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Truston 7-8 November 2018

The conference was well attended with keynote speakers from Leeds, Brighton and Australia. Two talks presented H&N5000 data: Andrea's which compared use of EORTC-QLQ-C30 & EQ5D-5L to assess Quality of Life and Laura-Jane Watson who talked about the trajectory and sequelae of eating and drinking outcomes in people who survive head and neck cancer. Andrea also gave an update on H&N5000 on behalf of Prof Steve Thomas which attracted interest from several delegates. 

 

St Ulrich Meeting October 2018

Professor Andy Ness attended a Human Papilloma Virus Research Retreat at St Ulrich in the Black Forest.

 

WCRF Grant Awarded

Our collaborators Tom Dudding and Nic Timpson have been awarded a grant by the World Cancer Research Fund to carry out further genotyping in Head and Neck 5000.

 

Joining the INHANCE Consortium September 2018

We have been successful in our bid to join the INHANCE consortium. The International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium is a collaboration of research groups leading large epidemiology studies of head and neck cancer to improve the understanding of the causes and mechanisms of head and neck cancer. The consortium includes investigators of over 30 studies who have pooled their data.

 

PredicTR-2 Study

We are now part of the MRC funded PredicTR-2 study led by Professor Hisham Mehanna at the University of Birmingham. This grant aims to build on previous work in identifying a potential biomarker for decision making in treating oropharyngeal tumours.

 

5th Workshop on Emerging Issues in Oncogenic Virus Research, Puglia, Italy May - June 2018

Professor Andy Ness attended the meeting run by IARC and gave a presentation titled ‘The prevalence of human papillomavirus antibodies and survival in people with head and neck cancer: results from Head and Neck 5000’.

 

Six papers published already in 2018

We have six papers published already this year looking at a wide range of issues from the impact of genetics to lifestyle behaviours to psychological wellbeing - details are available on the publications page.

 

German Society of Oto Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Meeting May 2018

Professor Ness attended the German Society of Oto Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Lübeck in May. He gave a presentation entitled "Prevalence of human papillomavirus antibodies and survival in people with head and neck cancer: results from Head and Neck 5000".

 

GW4Cancer Collaboration 18 April 2018

Andrea Waylen presented a poster on Head & Neck 5000 at the meeting. GW4Cancer brings together four of the most research-intensive universities in the UK; Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, to build on their substantial cancer research portfolios.

 

Congratulations to Femke Jansen who was awarded her PhD 15 January 2018

Femke, who is based in the Netherlands, came over to the UK to work on the Head and Neck 5000 data. Her PhD focussed on depression and survival among head and neck cancer patients. Congratulations Femke!
