Voyager Study Meeting, IARC, Lyon 25 October 2017
Members of the Head & Neck 5000 team attended a meeting at the World Health Organisation International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon to discuss the Voyager Project. Voyager brings together several large international research studies in head and neck cancer and is looking at the role of germline and somatic DNA mutations in oral and oropharyngeal cancers.
European Research Organisation on Genital Infection and Neoplasia (EUROGIN) Conference 8 - 10 October 2017
Professor Andy Ness and colleagues from the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) attended the EUROGIN conference in Amsterdam. Professor Ness gave an invited talk entitled "Well powered HPV serology Sub analyses in the Head and Neck 5000 study", his talk was part of a session called "The role of early Antigen HPV serology in Head and Neck Cancer".
Congratulations to Holly Cole-Hawkins who passed her PhD viva on Tuesday 19th September
Holly's research examined the longitudinal impact of head and neck cancer on quality of life. It was a mixed methods study which examined the patient and partner journey over the first twelve months from diagnosis using data from the Head and Neck 5000 study and face to face interviews with people with head and neck cancer and their partners. The research was based in the Head & Neck Cancer group and supervised by Drs Andrea Waylen, Fiona MacKichan, Christie Cabral and Professor Andy Ness.
Holly's plans are to get back to family life and also to plan out publications and further research based on this topic.

Professor Andy Ness sabbatical
Professor Andy Ness is undertaking a sabbatical in Heidelberg Germany from September 2017. He will remain as Chief Investigator for the Head & Neck 5000 study.
Head & Neck 5000 Follow-up Study September 2017
The Follow-up Study is now well underway. Over 2000 questionnaires have been sent out and staff at the study sites are busy collecting data from the medical notes. Over a quarter of the Data Capture Forms have now been completed.

Professor Andy Ness has submitted an abstract titled "Well powered HPV serology sub analyses in the Head and Neck 5000 study" to the Eurogin conference in Amsterdam 8-10 October 2017.
Professor Steve Thomas gave a talk at the British Association of Head & Neck Oncology Nurses (BAHNON) conference in Birmingham on 9th June 2017
The talk was on the Head & Neck 5000 study and the progress of the project to date.

Samantha Lang, Sarah Schimansky and Rhona Beynon all presented posters at this year's BAHNO conference.
Professor Steve Thomas gave a talk at the IAG KHT Head and Neck Cancer Meeting in Leipzig, Germany on 5th April
The talk was titled "UK Head and Neck registry for epidemiologic and molecular observation".
PhD student Femke Jansen is visiting from the Netherlands
Femke is looking at depression and survival among head and neck cancer patients and has come over to the UK to work with the Head and Neck 5000 data.

Professor Andy Ness' poster abstract title is "Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus antibodies and survival in people with head and neck cancer: results from Head and Neck 5000".
